About Checking (Natural Wood Cracks)
Checking is natural in solid wood and log furniture and should be expected. As wood seasons and dries over time, it shrinks and swells at different rates, which can create surface cracks called “checks.” These checks are normal and do not affect the structural integrity of the furniture.
In log furniture, checks typically do not extend beyond the center of the log and may occasionally develop a secondary check. This is part of the authentic character of real wood furniture.
Returns
Returns in original condition are accepted. The purchase price, less original shipping/handling costs and a 20% restocking fee, will be refunded. Notification to Western Passion must be made within 5 days of receipt to obtain a return authorization number. Product must be adequately packed and insured prior to shipping. Customer is responsible for the product and its safe return until received by the manufacturer.

2. Open and inspect the goods while the freight carrier is on site to identify concealed damage.
3. Do not sign the Bill of Lading until you have inspected for damage. If damaged, refuse delivery and do not sign.
4. Once the Bill of Lading is signed, the manufacturer and Western Passion are not responsible for freight damages; claims must be filed with the carrier.

All of Fireside Lodge Cedar Log Furniture is crafted using northern white cedar. They harvest our cedar locally from its Minnesota location. They operate our own cedar saw mill that produces the lumber for their furniture! Northern white cedar is extremely light and quite soft, but boasts excellent decay resistance and strength despite these characteristics. Seeing as they have more than 25 years' experience building it, they have it down to a science - as such, no one can boast a more solidly-built, beautiful natural log furniture.
About Checking: Checking is completely natural and should be expected in most solid wood and log furniture and will not affect the structural integrity of the furniture. Due to the innate characteristics of wood, as it seasons and dries over time, it shrinks and swells at different rates. Because the stress is unequal across the wood fibers, it splits and creates those cracks, or "checks."
Some might see a crack and question the structural integrity of the wood; however, it is actually becoming stronger as its density increases through the seasoning process (less moisture = denser). In log furniture, the checks will not surpass the center of the log and will, at times, have a secondary check. With solid woods like our barnwood, the checks should be hairline-sized in width and only a few inches long.
