Western Home: Western Decor: Navajo Inspired Rugs: Navajo Rug Recreations: Chief Blanket Collection Chief Blanket CollectionPerhaps the most admired of early Navajo blanket types from the classic period (1800-1870) was the Chief Blanket. The term, however, is a misnomer, for the blanket was never intended to designate the rank of its wearer. Usually superbly woven from the finest materials available, the Chief Blanket was expensive, and so became a mark of the rich and successful. From early times it was widely worn by Southwestern tribes and was traded extensively, especially to the buffalo-hunting tribesmen of the Plains and throughout the intermountain West. Designed to wrap around the body, Chief Blankets were woven wider horizontally than their vertical depth. Many of these classic Chief Blanket designs are from the original blankets collected by William Randolph Hearst, now housed in the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History.Call us for other designs in addition to those displayed here. | |||||||||
