The rugs in the Chief Blanket Collection are designs inspired by the most admired Navajo blanket types from the classic period (1800-1870). The Chief blanket was expensive and so became a mark of the rich and successful. Many of these designs are from the original blankets collected by William Randolph Hearst, which are now housed in the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History.

Our hand-woven, 100% wool rugs, created from original Navajo Rug designs, are woven in the Ukraine by master weavers. They use a superior quality wool for a high density weave, quality of color and ease of care. Special dying techniques achieve a color palate of unsurpassed beauty. The expert weavers then employ special weaving techniques to create the look of vegetable-dyed yarn frequently used in the original blankets.

These exclusive dying and weaving processes are extremely labor-intensive and time consuming. Achieving such authentic color and design takes an exceptional level of skill and dedication to the art of weaving.

Originally designed to wrap around the body, Chief blankets were woven wider horizontally than their vertical depth.

General Information
Due to the nature of all hand-dyed, hand-woven textiles, there is usually some variation in color, design and size from one rug to another. The variations between individual rugs are considered the hallmark of owning a hand-woven textile, since it reflects the unique artistry and expression of the weaver.
Colors may vary slightly due to the nature of the hand-dying process and the weaving techniques of individual weavers. Design elements and placement can vary when a pattern is made larger or smaller, as well as with the weaving style of individual weavers. Sizes vary slightly due to the nature of weaving on a loom. The width of the rug, determined by the width of the loom itself, usually varies only slightly, by one or two inches at most. The length of the rug can vary as much as four inches.

Product Care
Our rugs are produced to be practical and easy to care for, as well as beautiful. They are densely woven with superior quality wool that prevents normal dirt from sinking into the warp and weft. We recommend letting every-day dirt or tracked-in water, dry and then vacuuming the rug thoroughly. Minor spills can be cleaned with a solution of a mild detergent, such as woolite, and water. The rug's colors are specially dyed so they will not bleed or fade. A good quality rug pad is recommended, as well as turning the rug over about once a year.
